Its name came from the word “Tam,” meaning darkness, and true to its name, the city was forever wrapped in a dense, impenetrable cloak of shadow. Life in Tamnagar was stagnant, frozen, and dull under this unending darkness.

The most tragic reality of the city was that not a single ray of sunlight could ever pierce its tall, mysterious walls. Not only was the sun’s light forbidden, but no lamp could ever be lit within the city, as if an invisible, heavy restriction hung in the air. Every street, every corner, every house—inside and out—belonged entirely to the kingdom of darkness, which held everything in its black embrace.

Because of this boundless darkness, the people of Tamnagar lived under a constant, deep shadow of fear. Smiles never appeared on their faces, for fear had gripped every expression tightly. The greatest tragedy was in the lives of the children—they were meant to play, laugh, and leap with joy, yet even they could not move freely in this shadowy prison. Their toys gathered dust, and their innocent laughter was stifled by the silence of darkness.

The elders and wise people of the city whispered quietly that this darkness was not a natural phenomenon, but the work of a powerful and cruel ruler—the Dark King. It was widely believed that the Dark King had cast an incredibly terrible and potent spell. The sole purpose of this magic was to ensure that no object called “light” would ever exist in Tamnagar in any form. The spell was so strong that even the mere thought of light would send shivers through the hearts of the people, strengthening the Dark King’s rule from generation to generation.

THE SILENCE OF FEAR

The darkness of Tamnagar did not only cover the eyes—it weighed heavily on hearts as well. The silence there was not ordinary quiet; it was a fear that could be felt with every breath. People spoke little, thought much, and whatever they thought, they never had the courage to speak aloud.

The sound of footsteps was hushed in every street. Doors opened slowly and closed just as carefully, as if even the slightest noise might summon some unseen trouble. People walked with their eyes averted from each other, for even looking into someone’s eyes had come to feel like asking a dangerous question.

The deepest impact was on the children. They, naturally full of noise and laughter, played in whispers—if they played at all. They had forgotten how to run, and their laughter caught in their throats, stifled by the fear of darkness. They had been taught that speaking too much, laughing too much, and dreaming too much—all three were dangerous.

The elders often sat leaning against walls, as if waiting for time itself. They knew this silence was no ordinary quiet; it was the Dark King’s most powerful weapon. The fear was so deep that merely seeing a lamp made hearts tremble. Even the thought of light made people uneasy, as if it were some forgotten crime.

Amidst this silence, in the heart of Tamnagar, the little lamp lay quietly, watching it all. It could hear the silence, which spoke louder than words. It could feel the fear that had gripped the entire city. And perhaps for this very reason, its dream of burning was no longer just a wish—it had become the first stirrings of hope to break the silence of fear.
