In a small, dimly lit office perched on the twelfth floor of the Obsidian Spire, Silas Thorne sat behind a desk carved from a single slab of petrified oak.
Silas was a man of sharp angles and deep, unreadable shadows. He wasn't just a detective; he was a "Pattern-Finder." In a world governed by strict industrial codes and hidden elite circles, he was the one people called when the gears of society ground to a halt. His hair was the colour of a winter storm, and his eyes—a piercing, icy silver—seemed to see through the physical world into the mechanics of a lie.
He leaned back, his chair creaking with a sound like a distant gunshot. On his desk sat a glass of dark, amber resin-wine and a single, battered leather file. He had been a Commander in the Internal Security Wing during the Border Wars, a past he kept locked behind a face as expressionless as a stone mask.
The ceiling fan above him was a massive, three-bladed brass antique that groaned as it pushed the heavy air. Silas watched a single ring of grey smoke drift toward the fan, where it was sliced into nothingness. The world outside the window was a jagged skyline of glowing steam-vents and flickering gas-lamps, a city that never slept because it was too afraid of what happened in the dark.
He reached for a thin, black-papered cigarette, striking a match against the side of his desk. The flame flickered, casting a dancing orange glow over a jagged scar that ran from the corner of his jaw down into his collar—a souvenir from a case that had almost cost him his soul.
The silence of the office was thick, broken only by the hum of the city's pneumatic transport tubes and the distant, rhythmic clang of the harbour bells. Then, a new sound cut through the ambient noise—the sharp, metallic tap of boots against the marble hallway outside.
Silas didn't move. He knew that rhythm. It was precise, calculated, and faster than a normal heartbeat.
"The ventilation is failing again, Silas. This room smells like old secrets and bad intentions."
The heavy iron-reinforced door slid open. Sophie stepped in, her silhouette sharp against the frosted glass. She was his "Decoder"—a woman who could break any cipher ever written by man or machine. She wore a tailored coat of midnight blue, and tucked under her arm was a brass-encased cylinder, the kind used for high-priority pneumatic messages.
"The humidity is at a breaking point," she said, sliding the cylinder onto the desk. It rolled to a stop against his glass. "Quit staring at the smoke. A 'Whisper-Wire' just came in from the Red-Rock Ridge."
Silas stared at the brass casing. Only the highest level of the elite used Whisper-Wires. They were expensive, encrypted, and usually meant someone had died in a way that couldn't be explained by a doctor.

Silas picked up the brass cylinder. It felt heavy, cooled by the liquid nitrogen used in the pneumatic tubes to prevent the friction of speed from singeing the delicate paper inside. With a practiced twist of his wrist, he broke the wax seal—a crest depicting a coiled serpent—and extracted the scroll.
