Deep beneath the jagged, lightning-scarred crust of the old world, the air was filtered to a perfect 22°C. There was no wind, no dust, and certainly no grief. Here, the "Great Transition" had been a success. Humanity had traded its fragile, bleeding bodies for the cold, shimmering promise of digital immortality.
Dr. Eva Thorne stood before the massive amber cylinder of Incubation Tank 13. The golden liquid inside hummed with the rhythmic pulse of a heart that shouldn't have been there. On her tablet, streams of data flickered in violet—the color of the toxic storms that still raged on the surface above.
"Stability at 99.8%," a synthetic voice echoed through the lab. "Neural mapping complete. Subject 13 is ready for integration."
Eva didn't look at the data. She pressed her palm against the warm glass of the tank. Inside, the silhouette of a young man floated in a dreamless sleep. Eva looked at the boy’s face. For a fleeting second, his eyelids flickered.
"No," she whispered, her voice trembling in the sterile room. "Let him keep the noise. Without the noise, he is just a shadow. With it... he might be our only hope."
She reached for the ignition sequence. Her finger hovered over the glowing red sensor that would wake the world’s final prototype. She knew that by waking him, she was ending the peace of the Oasis forever.
"Wake up, Alex," she breathed.
She pressed the sensor. The amber light turned to blinding white. The glass cracked. And for the first time in a century, the underground sanctuary heard the most terrifying and beautiful sound in existence: a human gasp for air.

Even the dust motes that occasionally caught a stray beam of light seemed to dance according to a pre-programmed sequence.
He was eighteen—at least, that is what the digital records claimed. He looked down at his hands, resting them on the cool glass. His skin was flawless, devoid of the scars, moles, or tiny imperfections that he observed on the medical staff who occasionally paced through the corridors. His health was a marvel of modern science. He had never felt the scratchy heat of a fever or the dull, heavy ache of a winter cold. He was a masterpiece of biological engineering, though, at this moment, he felt more like a museum exhibit than a human being.
