SUMMARY

Kael let the paper flutter onto the desk. Master Veda. The name carried weight. He was the city’s most enigmatic figure—a man who claimed to see the future in the alignment of the planets and who carved masterpieces out of marble that looked almost too human.
"The Shadow Manor," Kael mused, reaching for his charcoal trench coat hanging on the brass rack. "A house built on the edge of a swamp, owned by a man who predicted his own death three times over."
"Is this the third time?" Mira asked, already grabbing her coat and a leather-bound satchel filled with her kit.
"No," Kael said, settling his fedora low over his eyes as they headed for the door. "This time, the stars didn't send a warning. They sent an ending."
They stepped out into the night. The city hummed in the distance, a dull roar of machinery and life, but as they climbed into their vintage black sedan, the direction they headed was toward the silence of the river—toward a mystery that had been decades in the making.
CHAPTER 2: THE LOCKED SANCTUM
The black sedan cut through the thick river mist like a blade through silk. As the wrought-iron gates of The Shadow Manor groaned open, the headlights illuminated a structure that seemed to be drowning in its own history. The manor was a sprawling, skeletal beast of Victorian stone and cracked plaster, suffocated by creeping ivy that looked like grasping fingers in the moonlight.
